My husband is an extremely honest man.  I can always trust him to answer me when I’m foolish enough to ask if I look fat in something.  And yet, when I was recently preparing an article for one of my clients, he didn’t tell me how bad the first draft was until I read him the second version. This led to a long conversation about my need for him to be as honest about my writing as he is about my clothes – even if he had to tell me it was terrible and did not make me look my best.

As a part-time entrepreneur, price is always a factor when we’re outsourcing work – how to make the most of our precious and limited funds – yet it isn’t the most important consideration in hiring an editor.  Trust is.  Do you trust the person you are using as your editor to be absolutely honest, even if they have to tell you you look fat in that paragraph?
